This tour includes a visit to the Monastery of Blessed Patapius and Lake Vouliagmeni. Located 14 km from the town of Loutraki, on the road to Perachora, the majestic Monastery of Blessed Patapius sits atop one of the Gerania Mountain peaks, overlooking the serene waters of the Corinth Canal at an altitude of about 700 meters above sea level.

The Holy Monastery of Agios Patapios, part of the Holy Diocese of Corinth, was built on a mountainside at a height of 650 meters, around a small cave that originally served as a skete. Over time, with the care of both clergy and laity, it was transformed into a pavilion. The monastery, founded in 1952 by Metropolitan Procopius of Corinth, honors the monk Patapius, who dedicated his life to serving God.

To reach the monastery, you’ll ascend 144 carved steps, leading to a peaceful retreat with stunning views. The cave of Blessed Patapius is located on the monastery’s northwestern side and houses an altar carved into the rock. Inside, you’ll find preserved 13th-century Byzantine frescoes. The new Church of the Assumption of the Virgin is also adorned with beautiful frescoes. Currently, around 40 nuns live in the monastery, continuing its spiritual tradition.

Next, the tour takes you to the natural wonder of Lake Vouliagmeni, a saltwater lake formed by tectonic activity. The lake’s waters are far saltier than the open sea and are renewed every six hours by tidal action. The shallow waters suddenly deepen, and their warmth allows for swimming well into late autumn. The lake, connected to the sea by a narrow strait, has a rich history with archaeological findings from the Early Helladic period along its shores.

Measuring two kilometers in length and one kilometer in width, with a depth of approximately 40 meters, Lake Vouliagmeni is a picturesque spot surrounded by mountains. Numerous taverns around the lake offer fresh seafood and a variety of Greek dishes, allowing visitors to dine while enjoying the stunning scenery. During your free time, you can swim, sunbathe, and soak in the beauty of the lake.

This individual tour includes transportation to the Monastery of Blessed Patapius, with a possible stop at the Corinth Canal, a visit to the monastery, and a trip to Lake Vouliagmeni. You’ll have time to relax, enjoy a meal, and even swim before returning to Athens. This excursion offers a perfect combination of spiritual enrichment and natural beauty.
