Ancient Corinth Day Tour
In southern Greece lies the Peloponnese Peninsula, considered by many historians as the birthplace of ancient Greece.
Located about 1.5 to 2 hours from Athens is Ancient Corinth, whose history dates back to the 7th millennium BC. As a major port city in Ancient Greece, Corinth’s strategic location on trade routes contributed to its prosperity and strength, establishing it as a thriving trading capital under the patronage of the god Apollo. By the 7th and 6th centuries BC, Corinth had surpassed even Athens in prominence, known for producing the finest weapons and world-renowned ceramics.
Significant Events in Corinth’s History:
- Birth of Diogenes: The famous philosopher, who advocated for a simple, happy life free from unnecessary possessions and worries, was born here.
- Isthmian Games: These athletic games, held in honor of the sea god Poseidon, were one of the major sporting events in ancient Greece.
- Apostle Paul’s Sermons: In the ancient marketplace, Apostle Paul preached his messages from the rostrum, where he was later tried and acquitted. This tribune still stands today and can be seen by visitors.
The Architecture of Ancient Corinth:
Most of the surviving structures date back to the Roman Empire. Tourists can explore fountains, the Temple of Apollo, and over 70 Doric columns, all showcasing the grandeur of the ancient city. The museum houses an extensive collection of ancient surgical instruments, mosaics, glassware, and sculptures.
Perched on the rock overlooking the ancient city ruins is the Acropolis of Corinth, where a preserved container for storing drinking water still remains.
Another notable landmark on the tourist route is the ancient Temple of Aphrodite. Thousands of priestesses once served in this temple, glorifying the goddess. Women with long hair were especially revered, as their status as priestesses was determined by the length of their hair. Over time, the temple was converted into a Christian church and later into a Turkish mosque.
