Olympia Day Tour

Greece annually attracts millions of tourists with its rich historical heritage and a wealth of attractions. Each visit is a journey into the origins of a small but beautiful country, filled with architectural marvels and lush plant life, nestled on rocky slopes.

Olympia: A Glimpse into the History of Hellas

The ancient city of Olympia, located in the northwest of the Peloponnese, is a cradle of countless myths and legends, casting an aura of mystery and allure over this historic site. Founded in honor of Zeus, the god of thunder, Olympia is also the birthplace of the Olympic Games, which originated here as part of the ancient Olympics.

Attractions

Olympia was renowned in antiquity for both its athletic culture and the religious devotion of its inhabitants. Consequently, its historical buildings and structures either honored sports or paid tribute to the gods.

Temples

The centerpiece of Olympia is the Temple of Zeus, which once housed a magnificent statue of the god, standing on a pedestal over 3 meters high. This temple was part of a larger religious complex that included sanctuaries and temples dedicated to the gods of Mount Olympus. Phidias’ workshop and the priests’ quarters were also located here.

Athletic Facilities

The ancient Olympic Stadium and Village are among the most visited sites, alongside the temples. The stadium, with a capacity of around 40,000 spectators, still holds remnants of the judges’ benches. Every year, the Olympic flame is traditionally ignited at this historic location.

Museums

Olympia is home to several museums, such as the Archaeological and Historical Museums, where visitors can explore the city’s history and the development of both the ancient Olympic Games and modern sports.

The modern city of Olympia seamlessly blends past and present, with its ancient ruins remaining a favorite destination for tourists from around the world.

2nd stop
Ancient Olympia
