Saint John the Russian Tour
The tour to St. John the Russian includes a visit to the village of Prokopi on the island of Euboea, where you will explore the Church of St. John the Russian, which houses his sacred relics. Afterward, you’ll have free time to stroll through the village before returning to Athens, with the option to stop at a traditional tavern for a meal upon request.
The Church of St. John the Russian, located in Prokopi, is a major pilgrimage site in Euboea and throughout Greece. The relics of the saint, brought from Prokopi in Central Asia by devout refugees, are preserved here.
St. John the Russian was born around 1690 in Russia. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1711, he was captured by the Turks and became a slave. His master, a Mameluke, took him back to his hometown of Urgup (Prokopi) in Asia Minor’s Cappadocia. Despite repeated attempts, the Turks were unsuccessful in converting John to Islam. His unwavering faith and integrity earned him the respect of both local Christians and Muslims.
John’s life in the village was marked by miracles, leading to his recognition as a man chosen by God. Upon his death, his master allowed Christians to honor him with a proper burial in the Church of St. George. Pilgrims, including both Christians and Turks, came from all over Cappadocia to seek miracles at his relics. In 1924, following the population exchange between Turkey and Greece, the people of Prokopi brought the saint’s relics with them when they resettled in Euboea, establishing a new village by the same name. Today, many come to his shrine seeking healing, especially for children and those struggling with drug addiction.
Each year, on May 27, the day commemorating the saint, thousands of believers gather to honor and pray to St. John the Russian. Christians from around the world visit to seek his intercession in times of hardship. On the eve of the feast, May 26, and on the feast day itself, many pilgrims walk 30 to 50 kilometers to the church as a testament to their faith.
Prokopi is located 50 kilometers from Chalkis, and the scenic route to the village makes for a truly enjoyable journey.
