Kalavryta Day Tour

Trip to Kalavryta

The 750 mm gauge railway line in Greece, connecting Diakofto and Kalavryta in the Peloponnese, is a historic and scenic route. Winding through the Vouraikos River Gorge, one of Europe’s top ten most beautiful gorges, this rack railway, which began operations in 1896, is world-renowned for its unique design and narrow 0.75-meter gauge. It features four gear sections to handle steep inclines that conventional trains cannot navigate, blending perfectly with the natural landscape.

Travelers from Diakofto to Kalavryta experience breathtaking views of the rugged gorge, passing by the river and witnessing stunning sights like “Court,” “Doors,” “Waterfalls,” and the soaring cliffs of Zachlorou. Visitors can even walk along the tracks or stop in Kato Zachlorou’s charming taverns for a break.

Religious and Historical Landmarks

One of the most notable landmarks is the eight-story monastery of Megalo Spileo (Great Cave), perched dramatically on cliffs at 940 meters above sea level. This awe-inspiring sight evokes the same wonder as Meteora, leaving visitors marveling at the human spirit that built such a structure in this seemingly inaccessible location. According to legend, the monastery dates back to the 4th century, and pilgrims come to see the relief icon of the Mother of God, made of wax and resin.

The nearby monastery of Agia Lavra, believed to have been founded in 961, played a pivotal role in Greece’s fight for independence. Its museum houses the flag of the Greek National Liberation Revolution, and legend connects the monastery with Archbishop Paleon Patron Germanos, who is said to have initiated the 1821 revolution here.

Slalom Skiing with a View of the Sea

Just 14 kilometers from Kalavryta is Greece’s second-largest ski resort, famous for offering skiers the unique experience of a sea view as they descend the mountain. This resort, one of Greece’s best, features 12 slopes of varying difficulty, a snowboarding park, and snowmobile rentals. After a day on the slopes, visitors can relax in the nearby cafes and restaurants, sampling local cuisine.

The Cave of Lakes: Nature’s Silent Wonder

The Peloponnese is home to many fascinating caves, but none as impressive as the Cave of Lakes. This massive three-story cave system is filled with striking stalactites and stalagmites and a series of 13 lakes arranged in terraces. These lakes form the bed of an underground river, and the cave’s unique beauty has enthralled visitors for centuries. Fossilized bones, including those of a hippopotamus, have been found here, providing evidence of life dating back to the 6th millennium BC.

Legends surround the cave, including a tale of the daughters of King Tiryns, who hid here after being driven mad as punishment for their boast that their palace was more magnificent than the temple of Hera.

The Historic Town of Kalavryta

Nestled among the Helmos mountains, Kalavryta is a welcoming city with traditional hotels, taverns, and shops, all set against a picturesque backdrop. The city holds a significant place in Greece’s history, being the starting point of the independence struggle against Ottoman rule. Freedom Square, with its historic hotel, is the heart of the town, while the Paleologina mansion stands as a landmark of the city’s storied past.

A visit to the Kalavryta Holocaust Museum offers insight into the tragic events of December 1943, when German forces executed civilians and burned the town. Kalavryta’s blend of rich history, natural beauty, and modern tourist amenities make it a popular destination, with nearby ski resorts and unforgettable sights along the winding mountain roads.
